Obesity Statistics Show Dads Need to be Thinking About Health Not Gifts this Father’s Day
INDIANAPOLIS – One of the best things a father can do for his family is to take good care of himself. According to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dad could be doing a little better job of that. According to the CDC, 69 percent of men over the age of 20 are overweight. In the 35-54 age brackets, 73 percent of men are overweight. More than 40 years ago, government statistics showed only 54 percent of men ages 35-54 were overweight.

Letter to the Editor: The Cost of Obesity
I appreciated Wendell Fowler’s viewpoint and healthy tips to help corporations gain a more competitive edge (May 28). It brought to light the important issue of healthy living and how we can take simple steps to make improvements. In addition to improving the lives of employees, it’s important to focus on employee’s families. A company’s bottom line can also be affected when an employee is out with a sick child.
According to the National Association for Sick Child Daycare, 350,000 kids of working parents get sick every day, costing businesses between $2 billion and $12 billion annually due to lost productivity and absences.
Although we know exercise and nutrition can’t cure the common cold, weight and inactivity does contribute to lower rates of type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, hypertension, and early onset osteoporosis.
Through a partnership among several community organizations committed to ending the obesity epidemic, information about obesity treatment and prevention as well as fitness and nutrition programs is simply a phone call away. However, many Hoosiers are unaware of this resource. Through the FitCity initiative, information about programs and resources in Marion County and the surrounding communities are available by calling 2-1-1. Studies show that 88 percent of the people who call and follow through on referrals experience improvements in their situations.
I encourage the business community to consider 2-1-1 as a resource – not just for the health of employees, but employees’ families. Together we can make sure that Hoosiers will enjoy active, healthy, and abundant lives.
Sincerely,
Chuck Brandenburg and Audrey Satterblom
