Founding Partners

The FitCity campaign is a community-wide collaboration between programs, funders, corporations, organizations and community groups all dedicated to one cause – making Greater Indianapolis and surrounding counties the healthiest place to live, work and grow.

The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis established childhood obesity as one of its funding priorities in 2004. Serving as a leader in the fight against childhood obesity, the Health Foundation has funded what is designed to be a multi-year campaign to address the problem in Central Indiana. The Health Foundation funds health-related projects not easily funded by other means, and organizations that offer health and health-related services, primarily to the community’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens.

Marion County Health Department is involved in BMI assessments at IPS schools and is in the midst of conducting a community-wide telephone survey to measure attitudes and opinions about fitness and nutrition. This survey is the first step in evaluating the health of the community -- results will be used by the health department and the FitCity campaign to further target outreach efforts, programming and other awareness building activities. This is one of many initiatives offered through the health department in the area of youth obesity prevention and education.
